How long can my rodent pet stay alone?
Whether you own a dog, a cat, a rabbit, a guinea pig or a budgie the following question eventually poses itself: How long can I leave my pet at home alone? Even if you are nearby all day the question eventually comes up before the next holiday. The vets from Maxi Zoo supply the answers.
As long as they have the company of a contemporary, gerbils, guinea pigs, chipmunks, degus and rabbits can be left alone during the day without any problems. If they do not have company they will waste away. The exception to this is hamsters, which live alone anyway. If you go away for the weekend you will need an animal loving person to provide food and water for rodents and rabbits as these sorts of animals need to eat constantly to keep their digestion healthy. If you leave a whole weekend food ration in the enclosure they will eat it all at once. This can easily lead to the stomach becoming too full and can be fatal.
