Why must an aquarium filter be used?
Filters prevent waste materials such as suspended particles and food residues from collecting, thereby ensuring a balanced biological climate.
What aquarium filters are there?
There are different filters for aquariums, such as the base filter, the activated carbon filter and the thermofilter. There is also a difference between internal and external filters. When selecting, the size of the tank, the plants and the fish stock are the main factors that matter. Only if the aquarium filter is strong enough is it able to keep the water clean. Our range includes filters from renowned manufacturers such as Eheim, Juwel and others.
When are internal filters used and how do they work?
Internal filters are usually used in small or medium-sized aquariums. Since these are often included when buying aquarium sets, they are also considered aquarium filters for beginners. Internal filters usually consist of a plastic housing containing various filter materials such as fleeces, foams or filter wool. The water is passed through the filter substances by means of an air lifter or a pump and then cleaned. If there are very small aquatic animals in the aquarium, they can be sucked into the filter through the suction opening. You should cover the respective filter material with a thin layer of water-permeable material, such as a very fine-meshed plastic net.
When are external filters used?
External filters are considered aquarium filters for advanced users and are generally used for medium-sized or large tanks. They are placed next to, under or behind the aquarium. Water is fed into the filter through a suction port, in which different filter materials such as foam, filter cotton, activated carbon or ceramic filter compounds take over the cleaning. After being cleaned through these layers, the water flows back into the aquarium. External filters have very good cleaning performance and create excellent water quality. The intervals between when the filter needs to be cleaned are very long. This makes an external filter particularly convenient and only its function and the connections should be checked regularly.
What is an undergravel filter?
An undergravel filter is installed on the aquarium floor. The filter mat is placed under the gravel and should correspond exactly to the dimensions of the aquarium. The gravel present in the base helps with filtering. A riser pipe and a pump take the water through the aquarium filter. An undergravel filter affects the appearance less than conventional internal filters. This special filter technique may also have a positive effect on the growth of the plants. However the plants and the gravel must be removed if work is required on the aquarium filter.
