Hoses – important for every aquarium
Hoses are practical everyday tools. They are flexible and can be used universally. In aquaristics, hoses are also important components for aquarium technology.
Why do you need aquarium hoses?
There are three types of hoses that have different functions for aquaristics:
- Air hose: air hoses are an essential part of aquarium ventilation.
- Water hose: These hoses are mainly used for external filters. One hose directs the aquarium water into the filter, and a second hose transports the purified water back into the tank. Water hoses are also essential when replacing water.
- Gas hose (CO2 hose): You need a gas hose if a CO2 system is in operation on your tank. It conducts the gas into the water and prevents CO2 from escaping. For normal air hoses, the loss can be up to 30 percent.
When installing, please always make sure that the aquarium hoses do not kink, which would inhibit the flow.
What should you pay attention to when purchasing an aquarium hose?
Conventional aquarium hoses are made of PVC or silicone. An aquarium hose specially made for aquaristics is food-safe and contains no plasticisers or other substances that could harm the inhabitants of the aquarium. Please make sure that the inner and outer diameters of the hose and the hose spouts are compatible with each other. It is a good idea to select tinted, slightly transparent material for visible hoses so you can see blockages. However, light-impermeable material also has its advantages: without light, less algae builds up in the hose. For saltwater aquariums, you should ensure that the material is suitable for long-term contact with saltwater. For the CO2 system, please use special gas-compatible hoses.
Do you need valves for the aquarium hose?
Valves or connectors are useful additions when attaching hose lines. Using check valves between the individual components of a ventilation, filter or gas installation prevents water from penetrating into the aquarium hose or flowing back in the reverse direction. Valves and closures are generally already present on modern filters. T-connectors are suitable for connecting several hoses, which can also be operated via a valve.
