The beak of the budgerigar is designed to crack and shell seeds. A balanced grain mixture is therefore the basis for a proper diet. Although a millet mixture is not part of natural budgerigar feed, it is a good and tasty substitute. An optimal mixture consists of different millet and grain varieties, canary grass and different seeds such as sesame, poppy, hemp or quinoa. However, for a proper diet, it is essential to supplement the seeds with fresh food. Fruit and green fodder are not only very important for the vitamin balance, but also cover part of the daily fluid requirement. Special vitamin mixtures are available for very fussy budgerigars that avoid green fodder and fruit, which are specifically designed for the birds’ needs.
