Cat litter: lots of varieties for your house cat
Experienced cat owners know that selecting the right cat litter is just as important as choosing the right cat toilet. Because if your cat does not cope with the litter, she may be reluctant or, at worst, not use the toilet at all and do her business elsewhere in the home.
What types of cat litter & cat sand are there?
In principle, there are three types of cat litter: mineral litter (clumping and non-clumping variants available), organic litter and silicate litter. All varieties have their advantages and disadvantages. Mineral clumping litter is the most commonly used variant, because it clumps particularly well. However, this type of litter is very heavy and often develops dust, which can lead to allergies. Biological cat litter like Cat’s Best or Biokat’s is lighter than mineral litter, develops hardly any dust, clumps well and binds odours. It is also very economical and biodegradable. However, this cat litter often get very widely spread across the home due to its light weight. Silicate litter is of medium weight, binds odours well and develops very little dust. However, this type of cat litter does not clump and is more expensive compared to the other varieties.
Which cat litter is the best for my cat?
The best cat litter for your house cat is the one that he finds pleasant and that meets your personal requirements. When a new cat is moving in, it is advisable to use the litter that the new addition has used before. If you want to switch to a different type of cat sand, mix the old cat litter with the new one and then gradually increase the proportion. If you don’t know which cat litter was used in the cat toilet before, we recommend testing several varieties to find the best one.
How often should I clean the cat toilet & how should I dispose of the cat litter?
If you use clumping litter, it is sufficient to remove the urine clumps and faeces several times a day and pour litter on top. Complete cleaning of the cat’s toilet only needs doing after a few weeks. It is different with non-clumping litter, which has to be completely cleaned more often. Biodegradable cat litter can be disposed of on the compost heap or in the organic waste. All other varieties belong in household waste after use. Tip: Fill the litter generously so that no urine gets to the floor of the toilet and the cat is able to properly bury its waste. 10 centimetres filling height is a good guideline.
