What types of cat toilet are there?
The selection of cat toilets is large and offers different variants such as closed and open cat toilets, self-cleaning cat toilets, as well as cat toilets with a sieve or high edge. Depending on what characteristics your cat shows when using the cat toilet, models from Trixie, Catit, Premiere or other manufacturers are suitable.
Which cat toilet is the right one for your cat?
The simplest cat toilet consists of a plastic tub with a low edge and is well suited for cats who do their business normally and discreetly bury their faeces. On the other hand, there are cats who prefer to do their business enclosed in a closed cat’s toilet with a hood. Still other cats scratch extensively and wildly, or who stand up to urinate: you need either a cat toilet with a very high edge or a closed cat toilet in XXL size. Whether a cat toilet is self-cleaning or not makes no difference to the cat, but is convenient for the cat owner and ensures a fresh, clean cat toilet at all times.
Where is the right place for the cat toilet?
You should place a cat toilet in a quiet and less frequented place. This way your cat can do its business in peace. Please do not place the cat toilet near the feeding bowl, the drinking areas or directly at the bedside. In a multi-cat household, make sure to set up at least one cat toilet per cat to prevent soiling. A proven rule of thumb: one toilet per cat plus one additional one.
How and how often should I clean the cat toilet?
You should remove faeces and urine from the litter box several times a day. This is easiest and quickest with a slotted scoop (for use with clumping litter) or a regular non-slotted scoop (for non-clumping litter). Depending on the type of litter, the entire litter box should be cleaned to prevent unpleasant odours. Remove all of the litter and dispose of it in the household waste. Then clean the litter box with hot water and, if necessary, a very small amount of cleaning agent. Once dry, add new litter. Caution: the use of strong-smelling cleaners can cause the cat to stop using the litter box because it is bothered by the smell.
