Dog apparel – functional weather protection for your four-legged friend
Dogs have fur so are they naturally protected against cold and wet conditions? That’s what you would think. But if you think dog apparel like dog coats etc. are useless accessories that are at best used to humanise dogs, you are wrong: there are good reasons to dress your dog. Dogs can also freeze, and some of them don’t enjoy getting wet in the rain. Functional dog apparel such as a dog coat, dog jacket or dog sweater is not just a fashion statement but serves a purpose in many cases.
What dogs need clothing?
Some dogs need clothing to protect them from the weather when it is cold or wet outside. Dog breeds with thin fur and not much of an undercoat are not sufficiently protected against low temperatures in cold weather or rain. Whether the fur is sparse due to the breed or due to a disease does not play a role for sensible dog apparel. Dog breeds from warmer regions are also less comfortable with our climate: a chihuahua is at a disadvantage compared to a husky. Smaller dogs or slender breeds such as greyhounds also often get cold faster. Dog clothing can also be useful for sick or older dogs who have problems with spinal discs or signs of wear on the musculoskeletal system. Sports dogs also cope with the transition between activity and breaks better if the muscles do not cool down too quickly. High-end dog apparel can help to prevent cooling and colds.
By the way, the paws also need protection in certain weather conditions. Dog shoes are not only useful in ice and snow, but also protect against road salt and grit.
How do dogs freeze?
Dogs that are too warm are relatively easy to recognise since they don’t sweat like us humans, but cool down by heavy panting. But how do you recognise a freezing dog? It usually clearly shows that it is freezing by trembling. Some dogs seem to draw into themselves in the cold. Others try to warm up with their human companion. When it is too cold for a dog, it exhibits very similar body reactions as a person – up to the refusal of longer walks. If you see your four-legged friend freezing during the walks, dress it in functional apparel: dog clothing & dog fashions in different sizes and chic models can be found at our online shop of brands such as AniOne.
