Dog coat – animal-friendly protection in wind and weather
Travel: Before you travel abroad with your dog, you should always become familiar with the rules for dealing with dogs in public. In some regions, stricter regulations apply and dogs must wear a muzzle in many situations.
Which dogs need a dog coat?
Especially dogs with short coats and/or little undercoat are better equipped with additional protection from a coat. Senior dogs with joint problems should also be kept dry with a dog coat in unpleasant weather.
What material is suitable for dog coats?
A raincoat for dogs – just like the one for humans – must meet two qualities above all: when buying, look for waterproof and breathable material. Dog coats with fleece are particularly suitable for daily walks. If you want a real wind and waterproof outdoor coat, polyester-nylon material mixes are suitable. Dog mackintoshes with PVC outer material keep the dog absolutely dry. Make sure that the dog’s stomach and kidney area are protected. A dog coat is exposed to a lot of wear and tear during daily walks in puddles and mud: The material should therefore be washable.
How should a dog coat fit?
The material-related wearing comfort is one thing – flexible straps with Velcro fasteners on the belly and chest ensure that the dog coat fits securely. Additional loops for the hind legs keep the dog coat securely in place, even when walking. The dog coat must not restrict the dog’s mobility or prevent it from communicating with other dogs. The tail, neck and legs must therefore remain free.
How do you measure the size for a dog coat?
Most importantly, the dog coat must fit the size of the dog. To measure the correct size for your dog, you need to know the back length and chest circumference of the animal. Measure the back length with a centimetre ruler from the nape of the neck to the base of the dog’s tail, and the chest circumference by running the tape measure from the shoulders around the dog. There has to be a little space: leave a centimetre between the dog and the tape measure. Dog coats are usually available in sizes XS for tiny dogs like Chihuahuas or Yorkshire Terriers to L for large dogs. Trixie and Hunter have a selection of functional and stylish dog coats that you can find in our online shop.
