Dog safety vests – safe, visible and well protected
A dog safety vest can serve several purposes at once: it protects against the cold and the elements and/or acts as a safety accessory. Some dog safety vests have integrated pockets that can be used to store useful items such as treats and address cards – in case your dog gets lost for some reason.
When are dog safety vests useful?
If you are often out and about with your dog in winter months or at night and your pet may also have a dark coat, a safety vest will help them stay visible. If your usual route is not well lit, you should get your dog a safety vest. It is difficult for drivers to see dogs at the side of the road. A dog safety vest in bright colours with reflective stripes provides additional safety. A fluorescent safety vest for dogs is also useful for walks in woods and fields: with a neon-coloured textile, the dog does not run the risk of being mistaken for a stray or wild animal if it enters a hunting area, possibly out of your sight.
When is a life jacket for dogs appropriate?
Your dog loves to play in water or is even professionally active in the cool water as a rescue dog or water sports dog? Or do you have a dog that accompanies you on sailing trips? Most dogs are excellent swimmers, but sudden overexertion or treacherous currents can be dangerous. With a dog life jacket, your four-legged friend is can accompany you safely on the water. Manufacturers such as AniOne have dog life jackets in their range, which you can find in our shop.
How do you choose the right size for a dog safety vest?
A dog safety vest is pulled over the head and fastened at the neck and below the belly, usually using continuously adjustable Velcro fasteners. It is just as easy to determine the right size for the dog safety vest. Depending on the manufacturer, either the length of the back or the circumference of the chest is used for the measurements. For the back, simply place a tape measure between the nape of the neck and the base of the tail and measure the distance, taking into account a margin of about one centimetre; the chest circumference is measured starting from the shoulders directly behind the front legs of the animal.
With a dog life jacket, you also need to take into account the weight of the animal. For safety, dog life jackets have safety straps with sturdy snap closures and a handle on the back for retrieving the animal.
