The dog bed – relaxed rest periods for four-legged friends
Dogs are naturally sleepyheads. A typical dog normally sleeps for about 17 hours a day – of course not in the form of deep sleep in one go, but rather in intermittent periods of rest, dozing and real sleep phases. Unlike cats who also have a similar need for sleep, many dogs did not always have the option of going to their bed to sleep. Because dogs had to be available as working animals during the process of domestication, the natural sleep pattern was lost during breeding. Dogs have to learn to relax, an therefore an undisturbed dog bed is very important.
Where is the ideal place for your dogs bed?
Even a young dog should get used to his own sleeping area, which only belongs to him. Whether this is ultimately a dog cushion, a dog blanket, a dog basket or a dog bed, the location is just as important. A dog bed should never be directly next to heating and not in the middle of a room with through-traffic. Find an area in the house or apartment where your dog can keep tabs on everything but is not constantly disturbed. There is nothing to say that the dog cannot sleep in the bedroom near you as long as it has its own sleeping area. For very large breeds that have enough exercise throughout the day but are not supposed to sleep in the house for various reasons, a high-quality dog kennel in the conservatory or outdoors in the summer is a solution worth considering for nighttime.
Dog sofa bed or basket: which option is the right one?
If your four-legged friend get really tired, he will basically welcome any bed. Which surface is suitable depends on the individual dog: some dogs prefer baskets for leaning on, others like blankets. A dog blanket or a dog cushion is usually suitable as a dog bed for large dogs. Especially large and therefore heavy breeds should have well padded surfaces. The same applies to the the beds for dogs with joint problems. In these cases, an orthopaedic dog bed makes sense.
Make sure that the material of the dog’s bed is washable and easy to clean: synthetic leather or a plastic underlay are practical as a dog bed for puppies or seniors who occasionally cannot hold their urine. The pillow inserts should also be washable and easy-care.
