Dogs are naturally sleepyheads. A typical dog normally sleeps for about 17 hours a day – of course not in the form of deep sleep in one go, but rather in intermittent periods of rest, dozing and real sleep phases. Unlike cats who also have a similar need for sleep, many dogs did not always have the option of going to their bed to sleep. Because dogs had to be available as working animals during the process of domestication, the natural sleep pattern was lost during breeding. Even a young dog should get used to his own sleeping area, which only belongs to him.
