Dog harness: support and safety
More and more owners are opting for a dog harness rather than a dog collar. A dog harness is an extension of the classic dog collar with an additional strap running under the chest or a vest-like structure. The dog harness in particular, unlike the collar, can have health benefits for the dog.
Why does my dog need a chest harness?
A collar fits tightly around the neck. Pulling on the lead can cause enormous forces to act on the dog’s larynx and cervical spine. With most dog harnesses, such as the Norwegian harness, the dog lead is hooked into the connection point between the neck strap and the chest strap. This shifts the point of pull from the neck to the chest area.
What special types of dog harnesses are there?
A lead harness, also known as an “H-harness”, and grows with the dog thanks to the mostly flexible size adjustability. As it is very light and simply designed, the dog harnesses are also well suited for sports or other activities. The Y-harness has a slightly tighter fit than the lead harness. It is considered particularly escape-proof. Last but not least, the Norwegian harness has become one of the most popular models among dog owners in recent years. You pull the harness over the dog’s head and fasten the chest strap. It has a comparatively small contact surface and is also suitable after operations, for example, when scars are still fresh.
You need a dog harness for the car if the dog is secured in the vehicle via the belt systems. There are also dog harnesses in the right sizes for small dogs and puppies.
How do you measure dog harnesses?
The harness size is determined by the dog’s chest circumference. You determine this with a measuring tape, which you pass from the shoulders under the chest and add a centimetre of leeway. Adjustable straps make it possible to adjust the harness steplessly. There should be about two finger widths of space between the dog and the straps. In any case, make sure that the chest strap does not get stuck in the dog’s armpit area or fit too tightly. In our online shop you can find dog harnesses from brands such as AniOne, Julius-K9, MORE FOR and many more.
If your dog is growing, remember to adjust the harness correctly in relation to the size of the puppy and change to a larger one in time if growth requires it.
How do you put on a dog harness correctly?
It is best to get your dog used to wearing a dog harness at an early age. The best way to do this is to reward him with positive reinforcement. Put the harness on your dog for a few minutes, play with him and take it off again. He will quickly develop a positive attachment to the harness.
