Hedgehog feed: how to help the little animals find food
Hedgehogs keep getting lost in our gardens on their journeys. The lovable little animals with the characteristic spiky coats look for their food in the wild, and are not dependent on outside help between May and August. However, in the spring and from late summer onwards, the food supply for hedgehogs is significantly reduced. Particularly in the first weeks after hibernation, there are often not enough insects to cover the need of hedgehogs due to persistent frost. In addition, the animals are often still weakened after hibernation, which poses problems when searching for food.
In autumn, many female hedgehogs give birth, which makes it more difficult. Both the mother and the babies are not yet in a physical condition to go and search for their own food. With hibernation approaching, for which hedgehogs should eat enough to put on a proper cushion of fat, the lack of food can have dramatic consequences. It is therefore a good idea to support the animals in spring and autumn and to order them special hedgehog feed.
Buying hedgehog feed: find high-quality food at Maxi Zoo
If you would like to support the hedgehogs near you in their search for food, you are in the right place at Maxi Zoo. You can buy species-appropriate hedgehog feed online in our shop. The fact that the hedgehog feed is high quality and contains only selected ingredients is extremely important, as it serves as the sole feed for the hedgehogs – at least temporarily. In addition, it must be remembered that not all ingredients are suitable for the small animals.
If you order hedgehog feed from Maxi Zoo, you can be sure that all the varieties are tailored to the special preferences of hedgehogs. As a result, the mixtures mainly contain high-quality animal protein in the form of mealworms, locusts, crustaceans or other meat or fish components. Depending on the type, the hedgehog feed also contains cereals such as oats, wheat or corn as well as peanuts, raisins and vegetable oils. In addition, the hedgehogs are supplied by the feed with many vitamins and minerals. In general, the feed mixtures are very nutritious to prepare the animals for the stresses of winter.
This must be taken into account when feeding the hedgehogs
It is difficult to estimate how much food a hedgehog needs per day, since the need depends greatly on the body weight and activity of the respective hedgehog. Approximately 950 grams of hedgehog feed are considered a rough guideline in terms of the daily needs of a medium-sized hedgehog. The container in which you serve the feed should be as flat as possible and cleaned regularly.
Contrary to the widespread view that hedgehogs should be fed with milk, this is actually extremely harmful to the health of these spiky little animals. Hedgehogs are basically lactose intolerant. For this reason, milk consumption in hedgehogs usually leads to diarrhoea and can even be fatal. Instead, it is recommended that a bowl of fresh drinking water should be provided.
