Chinchillas are very demanding when it comes to their habitat and they require a lot of space. After all, they are excellent jumpers and can jump up to one metre from standing in a single jump. They are not suitable to be kept outdoors, so a large, preferably multi-story chinchilla cage made of wood or metal is required for their accommodation. These nocturnal animals do not like direct sunlight, cold or damp.
The best location for a chinchilla cage is in a recess. The two short sides of the cage should also be opaquely shielded, as small animals startle easily and are sensitive to noise. Bedrooms are also not a suitable location, as the animals are active at night. Ideally, a cage will have several doors in order to make it easier to look after the animals and to clean their accommodation.
