In their natural habitat, degus spend the day on the ground and in earthworks. They are not outstanding climbers and they spend their time in small shrubs and branches close to the ground. However, they are very active and love to run and so they require a lot of space. Degu cages should, therefore, provide sufficient running surfaces for good pet care. Where space is limited, a degu cage with several whole floors is suitable. This can be set up to provide various opportunities for games and hiding. The individual levels must be easily accessible. It is best if the degu cage is in a bright and well ventilated room; the lounge is particularly suitable for this. The animals also like direct sunlight. However, they should always have a place to which they can retreat in order to avoid heat if necessary.
