07.10.2022 - Reading time: 4 minutes
The Cavapoo, also called cavoodle, resulted from a cross between small and miniature Poodles with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Because the two breeds are characterised by great friendliness towards humans and by their love of exercise, the Cavapoo is also a friendly, active and lovable companion and family dog. It is now one of the most popular hybrid breeds.

A “poo” for “Poodle”
People with a dog allergy mostly react to the dog hair, but sometimes also to the saliva. The special fur structure of the Poodle prevents moulting, which is why many, but not all, people with allergies do not react to the Poodle. Based on the wish to breed additional dog breeds with such fur, Poodles have been crossed with other breeds all over the world. The names of these hybrid breeds mostly include a “poo” or a “doodle” at the end, as does the Cavapoo. In almost all cases, they are direct descendants of pedigree parents. Additional generations are rarely found.
The character of the Cavapoo
The Cavapoo has traits of both parents. Which side dominates cannot be predicted which is why a Cavapoo puppy is always a little bundle of surprises. The miniature Poodle is deemed to be highly intelligent, very cooperative and slightly jittery. It loves exercise and wants to be occupied. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a slightly quieter nature and is very affectionate and sensitive. The mixtures of both breeds are mostly clever dogs that are good with humans and can adapt to the life of their owners very well. They love joint activities of any kind – whether it is a game in the garden, a long walk or cuddling on the couch. When it is occupied enough, the Cavapoo is a relaxed companion for the entire family. However, if socialisation and training are neglected, the mixture of the two breeds can develop into hyperactive animals who love to bark and who can have major problems if they are left alone.
Training and husbandry of the Cavapoo
With the direct pairing of two breeds, it is never really predictable how the puppies will develop. Families for whom the Poodle fur, which is often suitable for people with allergies, is important should be very cautious when buying a Cavapoo. These dogs can develop both fur types or a mix. The Cavapoo is a companion dog that is always in a good mood and that because of its size and its cuddly appearance is welcome almost anywhere. When it is well socialised, trained and occupied, it is ideally suited for a life in a city apartment or for a family with young children. Please ensure that the little dog gets a fixed area to retreat to where it really can sleep in peace. This relaxation is particularly important as both breeds tend to get overexcited and it then becomes very difficult to calm them down.
Caring for the Cavapoo
The Cavapoo may also surprise when it comes to its fur. The fur structure can only be definitively determined after the puppy fur has been replaced by the adult fur. Comprehensive and regular visits to the dog parlour are essential. The longer the fur, the more important it is for you to free your dog every day from burrs, sticks and other items and to thoroughly brush it. The ears require special care because inflammations can develop when they are blocked by hairs.
Special characteristics of the Cavapoo
With the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, some hereditary diseases and consequences of overbreeding are known. Due to the cross with the Poodle genes, these diseases occur less frequently, However, it is important to ensure a reputable breeder and gene-tested parent animals so that your Cavapoo can reach an age of up to 15 years.
