A genuine charmer from France
Like so many breeds, the precise origins of the Poodle is unknown: what is known is that the breed comes from France, where the Poodle is known as a Caniche. Alongside the Miniature Poodle, there is also the Standard Poodle, Small Poodle and Toy Poodle. They differ from one another only in their size. The breed of Miniature Poodle was recognised in 1930.
Originally, the Poodle was a keen hunting dog, used for hunting ducks, partridges and pheasants. He is closely related to the French water dog the Barbet, which is also a passionate hunter. In the 19th century, the Poodle became “aristocratic”: he was welcomed into numerous European courts as a playful and delightful companion dog. The Miniature Poodle became the star of the circus: his eagerness to learn, his talent for tricks and his (likely mostly inadvertent) propensity for comedy earned him delighted applause under the circus tent.
The personality of the Miniature Poodle
The Miniature Poodle is far more than just a clown: he is highly sociable and exceptional sensitive. For this reason, these dogs are often trained as therapy dogs and used in schools and other institutions. They are also used as rescue dogs. This trusty companion is also wonderful with children, as he is playful but also calm, patient and balanced. He is very affectionate towards his family and always makes his owners laugh with his intelligence, humour and acrobatics.
Training and keeping of a Miniature Poodle
The Miniature Poodle is very obedient and eager to learn by nature, and always wants to please his owners. That makes training easy. However, you should still be consistent during his puppy phase. Your little clown doesn’t need much space, but does require time out-of-doors and physical as well as mental stimulation: he loves water and extended walks. His artistic talents are well suited to dog sports such as dog dancing, agility or moby class. You can teach him little dog tricks, such as shaking hands or standing on his hind legs, at home. Thanks to their beautiful coat and proud bearing, Poodles are some of the best-loved show dogs.
